CLIMBING TERMS
Understanding the language
-
Bouldering is climbing without a rope and only up to a certain height.
-
Used interchangeably to describe the climbs on the wall. We call them problems because they often resemble puzzles to be solved - part of the fun!
-
Colorful plastic rocks that are attached to the wall in an indoor climbing gym.
-
Volumes are the teal geometric shapes that are screwed onto the wall and are considered an extension of the wall. Volumes can be used no matter what color climb you are on - like a wild card.
-
The difficulty of the boulder. We grade on the "v-scale" so you will see tags saying V and then a number. The higher the number, the harder the boulder. For example, a V1 is easier than a V2.
-
A corner that points outwards or the side edge of the wall. Sometimes you will see a tag saying "arete OFF" which means you cannot grab the arete on that specific boulder.
-
To "send" a boulder means to climb to the end of the boulder while following all of the rules of bouldering and without falling.
-
Advice climbers give each other on how to do a certain move or how to do the climb. Beta can also refer to the easiest or best way to climb a boulder. "Intended beta" is the way of climbing the boulder that was intended by the person who created the boulder (routesetter).
